Sula by Toni Morrison
“I got my mind. And what goes on in it. Which is to say, I got me… my lonely is mine.\”
Sula was gifted to me by an old english teacher and was her favorite book by Toni Morrison – now I know why.
In Toni morrison’s Sula, she gives life to the nuance of growing up Black and as a woman. Morrison uncovers the depths and complexities of friendship between Black women and navigating love for one another in a world not made to love us.
Sula peace is one of the fiercest characters I\’ve ever read in a novel. She lives her life the way she wants and never asks for anyone\’s approval because she knows that how she sees herself is what matters most.
As a young person from Ohio, Toni Morrison\’s novels completely changed how I saw myself, my community, and my history. She is one of the most important writers in my life and her works have become irreplaceable touchstones for my own writing.
